Can you ceramic coat paint protection film?

Yes. A ceramic coating can go over paint protection film, and many owners choose to have both on the same car. The film takes the impacts, and the coating sits on top, adds gloss and makes the whole car easier to keep clean.
This page covers why the two work well together, how we handle it and what to ask about if your film is already on the car.
What each product does
Paint protection film, also called clear bra or PPF, is a clear urethane layer over the paint. It absorbs stone chips, light abrasion and splatter, and self-healing film closes up light scuffs on its own.
A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to the surface and cures into a hard, slick layer. It repels water, resists chemical staining and UV, and makes the car easier to wash. The coating we use is Gyeon, applied by our Gyeon Certified Detailer team.
The two do different jobs. Film is the physical barrier. A coating is the surface treatment.
Why coat over film
It makes washing easier
Film has a smooth surface, and a coating makes it slicker. Dirt, water and bird droppings have less to grip, so washes are quicker and gentler. A car that is easier to wash gets washed with less force, which is better for the film as well.
It adds gloss
A coating gives film and paint the same deep, wet gloss, so the panels look uniform. That matters on a car with film on some panels and bare paint on others, since the coating ties the finish together.
It resists staining
Bug residue, bird droppings and road film can stain unprotected film over time. A coating gives them less to bond to, and they come off more easily.
It protects the paint the film does not cover
Most film packages cover the front of the car. The rest of the paint, the glass and the wheels get their protection from the coating. That covers the whole car with one system.
How we handle it
On a new film job, we do the work in order. Paint with defects is corrected first, since both film and coating lock in what is underneath. Film goes on the panels you choose. Then the Gyeon coating goes over the film and the rest of the paint, so the whole car shares the same surface.
Paint correction is sold together with a ceramic coating, so the paint is right before anything is sealed in. All of this is done in house by our full-time staff in climate-controlled bays.
Film that is already on your car
If your car came with film, or you had it installed elsewhere, you can still add a coating. Bring it in and we will look at the film before we do anything. We check the edges, the surface and the condition of the film, and we tell you what we find.
Tired or damaged film should be replaced, and we will say so. A coating over failing film does not fix it.
Matte film
Matte film is available at both shops, and matte finishes behave differently from gloss. They should not be polished or waxed, and glossy products can change the look. If you want a coating over matte film, talk to us first so we can pick the right product for the finish.
What to expect when you book
Send us the year, make and model, and tell us whether the film is new, already on the car or still to be installed. We will outline the order of work and the timing for your car. Front film packages take one to two days, and Full Body takes two to three, with the coating planned around that. At pickup we show you how to wash a coated, filmed car so it stays easy to care for.
Caring for film with a coating
- Wash by hand with a clean mitt and a gentle soap
- Dry with a soft towel or a blower
- Avoid abrasive brushes, harsh cleaners and wax
- Rinse bird droppings and bug splatter soon after you see them
- Keep a pressure washer nozzle well back from the film edges
A coating makes all of that easier, and it does not replace the habits.
Where tint fits
LLumar ceramic tint looks after the inside of the car. Film, coating and tint together make up The Beyond Package. If you want the details, see our comparison of film, coating and tint.
Questions about coating over film
Will a ceramic coating hurt paint protection film?
No. A coating is made to bond to automotive surfaces, and film is one of them. We choose the product for the film and the finish.
Does a coating make film last longer?
It makes the film easier to keep clean, and clean film ages better. The care and conditions matter more than the coating, and the film carries its own manufacturer backed warranty.
Should film or coating go on first?
Film first, then coating. The coating goes over the film and the paint around it.
Can I coat the glass and wheels in the same visit?
Yes. Gyeon coatings can go on glass and wheels as well as the paint, and we can plan it together.
Can I coat film that was installed years ago?
Often, yes. The film has to be in sound condition first, with edges down and no yellowing or cracking. We inspect it and tell you what we find before any product goes on.
Does a coating hide chips in film?
No. A coating adds gloss and slickness, and it does not fill damage. Chips and cuts in film stay as they are until the film is repaired or replaced.
