5 ways a clear bra protects against rock chips and road debris

A clear bra protects against rock chips by absorbing the impact in the film so the paint underneath stays intact. Rock chips are the most common damage on any car that sees highway miles, and they are the hardest to repair well. Film is the only product that physically stops them.

Rock chips are only the beginning of what road debris does. Here are five ways clear bra protects your car, starting with the one most owners are worried about.

1. It stops rock chips

A stone thrown from the tires of the car ahead can hit your hood at highway speed. The clear coat on a factory finish is thin and hard, and it does not flex. When a stone hits it, the coat chips, and the chip can reach the colour layer or the primer.

LLumar paint protection film is a flexible urethane layer. It absorbs the energy of the stone and spreads it across a wider area. The stone leaves a mark in the film, if it leaves one at all, and the paint underneath is untouched.

2. It handles sand, gravel and road grit

Not all road damage comes from one big stone. Fine grit and sand blast the front of the car like sandpaper, especially behind trucks and on roads under construction. Over months, the leading edge of the hood and the lower bumper turn hazy and speckled.

Film takes that abrasion on its surface. Light marks in the top layer heal with warmth, and the paint beneath keeps its gloss.

3. It keeps winter salt out of chips

Road salt and brine are a regular part of a New Jersey winter. They collect on the lower panels and the front end, and any chip in the paint gives them a way in. On steel panels that is how rust starts.

Film covers the area so salt never finds a chip. The salt still has to be rinsed off, and we cover that in our guide to what winter does to paint, and on a protected car it lands on the film.

4. It guards against parking lot contact

Shopping carts, door edges and nearby bumpers leave scuffs and light scratches on exposed paint. Full Front Plus adds the rocker panels and the A-pillars, and Full Body covers the doors and rear bumper. Film over those areas takes the marks that would otherwise need polishing.

5. It protects against bugs and bird droppings

Bug splatter and bird droppings are acidic. Left on bare paint in the sun, they etch the clear coat and leave a mark that a wash will not remove. On film they sit on a stain resistant surface, and a gentle wash lifts them away. If a stain does set into the film, it is the film that needs attention, and the paint underneath is untouched.

Where debris hits hardest

The damage clusters in a pattern, and the packages follow it.

  • The leading edge of the hood and the front bumper take the most chips
  • The mirrors and A-pillars catch stones off the hood and from the side
  • The rocker panels take what the front tires throw back
  • The headlights collect scratches and haze

Basic Front covers the bumper, hood, mirrors, headlights and fog lights. Full Front adds the full front fenders. Full Front Plus adds the A-pillars, the roof edge over the windshield and the rocker panels. Full Body covers every painted panel.

How well film stands up

Film is strong, though no film is indestructible. A very large stone at speed, or a sharp object, can cut through it. When that happens, the film takes the damage and can be repaired or replaced, which is far easier than repainting. It is a layer designed to be the thing that gets damaged.

How we install it

The LLumar film is cut to fit your car and laid by hand in a climate-controlled bay, with the edges wrapped wherever the panel allows. Paint with defects is corrected first, because film locks in whatever sits under it. Every job is done in house by our full-time staff, and the film carries a manufacturer backed warranty.

Rock chip questions

Can clear bra fix chips that are already there?

No. Film does not fill or hide chips. We repair or correct the paint where we can and then apply film to keep new chips from forming.

Will I see the film on my hood?

From normal viewing distance, no. The gloss film is optically clear and the edges are wrapped wherever the panel allows. You may find a faint edge on some panels if you look for it up close.

Which panels should I cover for highway driving?

Start with Full Front. If you drive a lot at speed, Full Front Plus adds the rocker panels and the A-pillars, which catch what the front tires and the hood throw back.

Does film stop chips on a truck or an SUV?

Yes. The taller front end of a truck or SUV presents a bigger target to stones and bugs, and film covers it the same way. We quote each job on the vehicle itself.

Does clear bra work against stones on the highway?

Yes. That is the situation it is designed for. The faster the impact, the more the flexible urethane layer matters.

Is a clear bra better than a ceramic coating for chips?

Yes. A coating is hard and thin, and it does not stop a stone. It adds gloss and makes washing easier. Film and coating work well together, and we explain how in our comparison of film, coating and tint.
