How does clear bra protect my paint?

Clear bra is a clear urethane film applied over your paint. It protects by taking the hit. A stone, a bug or a scratch lands on the film, and the clear coat and colour underneath stay as they left the factory. The LLumar clear bra we install is also self-healing, so light marks in the surface close up on their own.
Clear bra is another name for paint protection film, or PPF. The term goes back to the old vinyl bras that covered the front of a car. The modern product has little in common with them. It is clear, sits flush against the paint and is made to be left on all year.
What clear bra is made of
Clear bra is built in layers. A top coat is where the self-healing and stain resistance live. Under it sits a flexible urethane layer, which does the work of absorbing impact. At the bottom is an adhesive that holds the film to the paint without damaging it.
Each layer has a job, and the combination is why film outperforms wax, sealants and coatings against physical damage. Those products sit on the surface in a thin layer. Film is a real, measurable thickness between the paint and the world.
How clear bra stops damage
It absorbs and spreads impact
When a stone hits the film, the urethane flexes and spreads the force over a wider area. The result is a small mark in the film where there would have been a crater in the paint. At highway speed, a stone carries enough energy to chip a bare clear coat. The same stone hits film and is stopped.
It heals light scratches
The top coat of LLumar film is self-healing. Swirls from washing and light scuffs from everyday use settle back into a smooth surface when the film warms up. Sun on the hood or warm water in a hand wash is often enough. Deeper cuts that go through the top coat will not heal, and those are the ones that call for film replacement.
It resists staining and yellowing
Bug acid, bird droppings and tree sap can etch bare clear coat. On film, they sit on a stain resistant surface and rinse off more easily. Quality film is also built with UV inhibitors, so it stays clear over the years.
It makes the car easier to wash
The surface of the film is smooth and sheds water and grime. Dirt does not grip it the way it grips a rough or worn clear coat, so washes are quicker and gentler.
Where clear bra goes on the car
The front end takes the most damage, so that is where most cars start.
- The front bumper, where stones and bugs land first
- The full hood, which takes a steady spray at highway speed
- The mirrors, which sit proud of the body and take hits from the side
- The headlights and fog lights, which can scratch and cloud
- The front fenders, where the hood stops and the film line would otherwise sit
Some owners add the A-pillars, the roof edge above the windshield and the rocker panels. Others cover the entire car. We cover those combinations in our page on which panels to protect.
Will you see it?
Gloss film is optically clear, and we wrap the edges around the panel wherever the shape allows. From normal distance there is nothing to find. Up close, you may see a faint edge on certain panels.
Matte film is available at both shops. It gives a satin finish on a gloss car, and it protects factory matte paint, which cannot be polished if it gets marked.
How we install it
Every install is done in house by our full-time staff, in a climate-controlled bay. The car is washed, decontaminated and inspected. Paint with defects is corrected first, because film locks in whatever is underneath. Patterns are adjusted to the car before cutting, and the film is applied one panel at a time.
The film carries a manufacturer backed warranty, and we go over care with you when you pick the car up.
Clear bra questions
Does clear bra hurt the paint underneath?
No. The film is made to sit on factory paint and to come off without harming it when removed properly. That is why it is a popular choice for keeping the original finish on a car you may sell later.
Is clear bra the same as ceramic coating?
They are different products. Film is a physical barrier against chips and scratches. A Gyeon ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that adds gloss and makes the car easier to clean. Our comparison of film, coating and tint explains where each fits.
Can clear bra go on any car?
Yes. Daily drivers, trucks, sports cars and exotics all take it. Some bumpers and body lines are trickier than others, which is part of why every job is quoted on the car itself.
How long does an install take?
Basic Front is usually done within a day. Full Front and Full Front Plus take one to two days, and Full Body takes two to three.
Does clear bra need special washing?
Gentle hand washing keeps it looking its best. Skip abrasive brushes and harsh cleaners, and rinse off bird droppings and bug splatter soon after you see them. We go over the details at pickup.
