The benefits of ceramic coating for your car's paint

A ceramic coating gives paint a deeper gloss, repels water and dirt, resists salt, sap and bird droppings, and makes the car easier to wash. It lasts for years with proper care, and it does not wear off the way wax does. How long yours lasts depends on the prep, the product and how the car is washed afterward.
What a ceramic coating is
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, slick layer. It becomes part of the surface, which is why it holds up so much longer than wax or a spray sealant. Those products sit on top of the paint and break down within weeks or months.
We apply Gyeon coatings. Buff & Beyond is a Gyeon Certified Detailer, and every coating is applied in house in our climate-controlled bays.
Longer lasting than wax
Wax breaks down after a few washes and a couple of rainy days. Keeping a waxed car looking good means redoing it again and again.
A coating stays put. You do not have to reapply it to keep the benefit, and the car keeps beading water through the seasons.
Water and dirt roll off
Coated paint is hydrophobic. Water beads up and slides away, taking loose dirt with it. The car stays cleaner longer, and water spots are less of a problem because there is less standing water to dry on the surface.
When it does get dirty, the grime lets go with less effort. A gentle wash is usually enough, which also means fewer wash marks.
Protection from the sun and from contamination
Sun oxidizes paint and fades it over time, and dark colors show it first. A coating adds a layer between the clear coat and the sunlight.
It also keeps bird droppings, tree sap, bug remains and road salt from bonding to the paint. They still need to be washed off, but they have less time and less grip to cause damage.
Gloss and depth
A coating makes paint look deeper and richer, with a harder, glassier shine. The effect is strongest on a correctly prepared surface, which is why paint correction is sold together with every coating we apply.
Polishing removes swirls and light scratches first. The coating then locks that result in and adds its own shine on top.
How long ceramic coating lasts
Ceramic coating lasts for years when it is applied well and cared for properly. There is no single number that fits every car, because several things decide it.
- Preparation. A coating bonds best to paint that has been washed, decontaminated and corrected.
- The product. Different coatings are built for different levels of durability, and the install should match what the owner wants.
- Washing. Gentle hand washes with clean mitts and quality soap keep a coating working. Automatic brush washes and harsh cleaners wear it down.
- Environment. A garaged car lasts longer than one parked under trees all year. Salt, sun and sap all take a toll.
- Maintenance. Keeping a coated car clean regularly helps it perform the way it should.
When you pick up the car, we explain what care the coating asks for.
Caring for a coated car
A coated car is easy to look after, and a few habits help it perform. Wash it by hand with a clean mitt and a quality car soap, rinse well, and dry with a soft towel. Avoid automatic washes with brushes, which drag grit across the surface and put swirls in the paint over time.
Rinse off bird droppings, bug remains and salt when you see them. The coating gives you more time before they cause trouble, and the sooner they come off, the better the paint looks.
What a ceramic coating does not do
A coating does not stop stone chips, deep scratches or collision damage. It does not make paint scratch proof, and it does not replace washing. If you drive a lot of highway miles, pair the coating with paint protection film on the front end. Film stops impacts and the coating handles everything else.
Is a coating right for you?
If you want your car to stay glossy without hours of upkeep, yes. A coating helps if you park outside, drive daily, or plan to sell the car later and want the paint in good shape. Our page on whether ceramic coating is worth it goes through who benefits most.
Where the coating can go
Coatings can go on more than paint. They can go over paint protection film, on wheels and on glass. Wheel coatings help shed brake dust, and a coated windshield sheds water so the view stays clearer in the rain. Most owners choose a combination based on how the car is used.
Ceramic coating questions
How long does a ceramic coating last?
It lasts for years with proper care. Prep, the coating used, how the car is washed and where it is parked all affect the result.
Can I wax over a ceramic coating?
You do not need to. A coating does the job wax would do, and stacking products on top can hide the water beading that tells you it is working. Ask us what to use for maintenance.
Will a coating make my car scratch proof?
No. It adds a slick layer that helps the surface resist light marks and makes washing gentler. Deep scratches and chips need film to prevent them.
How soon can I wash a coated car?
The coating needs time to cure before it meets water. We tell you exactly how long to wait when you pick up the car, because it depends on the coating and the weather.
