What a New Jersey winter does to your car paint, and how a ceramic coating helps

A New Jersey winter leaves salt, brine and road grime on the paint for months, and most of the damage goes unnoticed until the spring wash. A ceramic coating does not make the paint immune. It does make the surface slick enough that salt and film rinse off more easily, so less of it stays bonded to the clear coat.

What winter leaves on the paint

A car can look fine in March and still have spent the winter taking damage. Salt, moisture and grime sit on the paint for weeks at a time, because cold, wet weather makes it hard to wash the car and let it dry. Driving on treated roads on the Turnpike, the Parkway or a local road puts a fresh layer on every trip.

Road crews spread rock salt and spray liquid brine ahead of storms. Both end up on your car whether you drive through a storm or not.

Road salt and brine

The salt and brine on New Jersey roads get thrown onto the lower doors, rocker panels, wheel areas and rear of the car. Salt holds moisture against the paint and bonds to the surface. A quick rinse does not remove all of it.

Salt is also the thing that turns a small chip into a rust problem. Once it gets into a chip, it works on the metal underneath. That is a reason to deal with chips on the front of the car before winter, and film does that better than anything else.

Freeze and thaw

Temperatures swing above and below freezing, and moisture and dirt on the paint expand and contract with them. Over a season, the finish loses clarity and gets harder to keep clean.

Water that sits in seams and around trim freezes and thaws repeatedly. That is where grime collects and where it is hardest to get at.

Potholes, gravel and sand

Winter also loosens the road surface. Potholes open up, and sand and gravel get spread for traction. Those get thrown at the front of the car and the rocker panels, which are the panels that chip. A coating cannot help with that part, and we say so plainly. Paint protection film is the product for chips.

What a ceramic coating changes in winter

A Gyeon ceramic coating bonds to the paint and makes the surface slick and water repellent. Salt, road film and grime cling less, so washes are faster and the car stays cleaner between them. The coating also resists chemical staining and sun fade.

In practice, a coated car is easier to rinse clean on a mild winter day. Wash off the salt when you can and the coating makes that job quicker.

What a coating does not do

It does not stop stone chips, deep scratches or collision damage. It does not replace washing, and a coated car still needs its salt rinsed off through the winter. Paint protection film is what guards against chips, and the two work well together. Many owners put film on the front and a coating over everything, which is what The Beyond Package is built around.

Why the paint is prepared first

A coating seals in whatever is under it, so we correct the paint before coating. Ceramic coating and paint correction are sold together for that reason. The coating then sits on a clean, smooth surface.

We also coat wheels and glass if you want them done. Coated wheels shed brake dust and road grime more easily, and a coated windshield sheds water, which helps when the roads are wet and slushy.

Washing a coated car in winter

Winter washing is about getting salt off, and it does not need to be fancy. Rinse the lower panels, wheel areas and rear of the car at a self serve bay or at home when the temperature allows, then dry the door seals and handles so they do not freeze shut.

A coated surface releases salt faster, so even a short rinse removes most of what the road left behind.

Timing

Coating before winter means the paint is protected before the first salt truck goes out. Waiting until spring means the salt and grime are already on the car and need more work to remove. Our page on why fall is the best time for ceramic coating covers the timing in more detail.

How we do it at Buff & Beyond

Buff & Beyond is a Gyeon Certified Detailer, and all coating work is done in house by our full-time staff in climate-controlled bays. When you pick up the car we tell you how long to wait before the first wash and how to wash it through the winter.

Winter and ceramic coating questions

Should I wash my car in the winter if it is coated?

Yes, whenever you can. Rinsing off salt as soon as the weather allows is the best thing you can do for the paint, and a coating makes that quicker.

Does a ceramic coating stop road salt from damaging paint?

It does not make the paint immune, but it gives salt less to grip. Salt that lands on the coating rinses off more easily than salt that lands on bare clear coat.

Can I coat my car in the cold?

The coating goes on in our climate-controlled bays, so the weather outside does not affect the application. After the car leaves, we tell you how long to wait before washing.

Will a coating protect my car from rust?

A coating works on the paint surface. Rust starts when salt and moisture reach bare metal through a chip or scratch, so keeping the paint intact with film is the better answer for that.
