The best time of year to ceramic coat your car

Fall is the best time to ceramic coat a car in New Jersey. The summer is over, the road salt has not started, and there is time to prepare the paint before the weather turns. A coating protects best when it is on before the paint takes the hit, and winter is the hardest season on a finish.

Protection in place before winter

Coat in fall and the car goes into the first snow with a protected surface. Wait until spring and winter has already left salt and grime behind. A coating does not undo that, and the paint has to be cleaned and often polished before the coating goes on.

Salt and brine are thrown onto the lower panels all season, and a slick coated surface lets them rinse off more easily. Our page on what a New Jersey winter does to car paint goes through the damage in detail.

What summer leaves on the paint

By September most cars carry tree sap, bird droppings, insect residue, road grime and water spots. Sun bakes those onto the clear coat and some of them etch. All of that has to come off before a coating goes on, and we remove it as part of the preparation.

That makes fall a good checkpoint. We can see what the summer did to the car and fix it before winter adds more.

Preparation comes first

A coating seals in whatever is under it. We wash and decontaminate the car, then correct the paint with a machine polish to remove swirls and scratches. Ceramic coating and paint correction are sold together for this reason.

The coating then sits on a smooth, clean surface. Skipping the prep to save time seals the defects in for as long as the coating lasts.

Why not spring or summer?

You can coat a car at any time of year, since the work happens inside our climate-controlled bays. The reason fall is better has to do with what the paint goes through afterward.

  • Spring coating starts after the worst of the salt has already been on the car.
  • Summer coating protects well against sun and sap, and it is a fine time to do it if that is the concern.
  • Fall coating covers the car for the season that is hardest on it.

There is no wrong month to protect the paint. Fall is the one that gives you the most benefit from the first day.

What the coating does in winter

Water beads and runs off a coated car. Salt, road film and grime cling less, so winter washes are quicker and the car stays cleaner between them. A coating does not stop stone chips, so pair it with paint protection film if you want that as well.

Winter is also when washing gets inconvenient. Cold days and freezing temperatures limit how often you can wash the car, so a surface that stays cleaner on its own has real value.

Coating compared to wax

Wax gives a short shine and wears off. A Gyeon coating bonds to the paint and keeps working through the winter without being redone. After the car comes out of the bay, we tell you how long to wait before washing it so the coating can cure fully.

Film, coating and tint together

If you want film, coating and tint together, that is The Beyond Package. Film on the front of the car handles chips, the coating handles gloss and washing, and tint handles heat and sun in the cabin.

Fall is a good time for the film too, since chips from winter gravel and sand are the damage that is hardest to undo. Doing all three in one visit saves you from bringing the car in several times.

What to do before you bring the car in

You do not have to prepare the car yourself. Bring it as it is, and we will wash and decontaminate it in the bay. It helps to tell us what you have used on the paint before, including waxes and sealants, and any spots you have noticed, like etched marks from bird droppings or sap.

We look over the paint with you, explain how much correction it needs, and give you a quote based on the car.

Booking a fall coating

Buff & Beyond has been in Millstone since 2008. We are a Gyeon Certified Detailer, and our full-time staff does every coating in house in climate-controlled bays. Our Ocean Township shop works the same way.

Fall ceramic coating questions

When should I book a ceramic coating for winter?

Early in the fall, so the car is done before the first snow.

Can I still coat my car after winter starts?

Yes. The work is done indoors, so the weather outside does not stop it. The car will have more to clean off the paint first.

Is the coating ready for snow right away?

The coating needs time to cure before it meets water. We tell you how long to wait before the first wash and how to care for the car in the meantime.

Does a coating replace winter washing?

No. It makes washing quicker and the salt easier to rinse off, but the car still needs to be washed through the winter.
