Paint protection film in Millstone, NJ

Paint protection film is a clear urethane layer that goes over your paint and takes the chips, scratches and stains that would otherwise land on it. For Millstone drivers, that means the gravel, road salt and highway debris that central New Jersey throws at a car every week. Buff & Beyond has installed LLumar film from our shop on Rike Drive in Millstone since 2008, and we now install it at our Ocean Township shop as well.

This page covers what film stops on local roads, which package suits which kind of driving and what to expect when you bring the car in.

What paint protection film does

The film is thin, tough and optically clear. Each piece is cut to fit its panel and wrapped around the edges wherever the shape allows, so it reads as paint. The LLumar film we install is self-healing. Light swirls and scuffs in the top layer close up with warmth from the sun, the engine or warm water.

Gloss film disappears on the paint. Matte film is available at both shops for factory matte finishes, or for owners who want a satin look on a gloss car.

What it stops on roads around Millstone

Central New Jersey is a place where people commute. I-195 and the Garden State Parkway serve the area, and plenty of daily driving happens at highway speed. Highway speed is when stones hurt, and construction season keeps loose gravel on the shoulders and in the lanes.

Stone chips

Trucks, construction vehicles and the car ahead throw gravel at the hood, bumper and mirrors. Each hit that breaks the clear coat gives water and salt a way in. The hit lands on the film, and the paint stays clean.

Road salt and brine

New Jersey crews treat the roads heavily every winter, and what they spread ends up on the lower panels and the front end. Salt that settles into a chip starts working on the metal underneath. With film in place, there is no chip for it to settle into.

Bugs, birds and sap

Summer brings bug splatter on the front end, and trees bring sap and droppings on the hood and roof. All of it is acidic enough to etch bare clear coat if it sits. On film, it sits on a layer that can be cleaned off.

Wash marks and parking lot scuffs

Swirls from automatic washes and light scratches from shopping carts and door edges land on the film. Light marks heal on their own.

Choosing a package

Most damage lands at the front of the car, so most owners start there. Each package is quoted on your car.

  • Basic Front: front bumper, full hood, mirrors, headlights and fog lights. Usually done within a day.
  • Full Front: Basic Front plus the full front fenders. One to two days.
  • Full Front Plus: Full Front plus the A-pillars, the roof edge over the windshield and the rocker panels. One to two days.
  • Full Body: every painted panel. Two to three days.

Full Front is the package we recommend most often for a daily driver, because it covers the whole face of the car with no film line across the fenders. Full Body suits cars you plan to keep for a long time, and collector and exotic cars.

How we install it

The car is washed, decontaminated and inspected under good light. If the paint has swirls or scratches, we talk about correction before any film goes on, because film keeps whatever is underneath it. Patterns are adjusted to your car before they are cut.

The film is laid panel by panel in a climate-controlled bay with edges wrapped wherever the panel allows. Every job is done in house by our full-time staff, and the film carries a manufacturer backed warranty. At pickup we go over how to wash and care for it.

Adding a coating or tint

Many Millstone customers pair film with a Gyeon ceramic coating, applied by our Gyeon Certified Detailer team over corrected paint. The coating goes over the film and the rest of the paint, which makes the car easier to wash. LLumar ceramic tint takes care of the cabin. Film, coating and tint together make up The Beyond Package.

Paint protection film in Millstone questions

How do I know if my car is a good fit for film?

Almost any car is. Newer cars, cars with expensive or special paint and cars that see highway miles benefit the most. If the front end already has a lot of chips, we look at it with you first and talk about what to correct.

Where is the Millstone shop?

We are at 600 Rike Drive in Millstone, and you can call us at (609) 642-8206. Our Ocean Township shop is at 1304 Brielle Ave, Building B, at (732) 801-2078.

Can I wait while the film goes on?

Film takes time to do right, from one day for Basic Front to two or three days for Full Body. We will tell you the timing for your car when we quote it.

Will film change how my car looks?

Gloss film is clear and the edges are wrapped, so from normal viewing distance there is nothing to see. Matte film changes the finish on purpose, so you only choose it if you want that look.

Do you work on Teslas and other EVs?

Yes. Teslas come through both shops regularly for film, coating and tint. Send the year and model with your estimate request.

What should I do before I bring the car in?

Nothing special. A clean car helps us see the paint, but we wash and decontaminate every car before film goes on. Tell us about any chips, swirls or past paintwork so we can plan around them.
