How to prevent paint damage on a new car

The best way to protect the paint on a new car is to combine good habits with the right products. Wash it by hand with clean tools, park out of harm's way, put paint protection film on the panels that take impacts and have a ceramic coating applied over corrected paint. Each step covers something the others do not.

This page goes through what actually damages new paint, and what to do about each cause in the first weeks and over the years.

What damages new paint

New paint is not tough. The clear coat on a modern car is thin, and it is built to look good on the lot. Everyday life works on it from the first day.

  • Rock chips and gravel from the road
  • Road salt and brine through the winter
  • Sun, which dulls gloss and fades colour over time
  • Bird droppings and bug splatter, which are acidic
  • Tree sap, which bonds to the surface as it sets
  • Swirls from washing and drying

New Jersey's seasons make each one worse. Winter brings salt, spring brings pollen and rain, summer brings sun and bugs and fall brings leaves and sap.

Wash it the right way

Most swirls on new cars come from the car wash. Automatic brush washes drag grit across the paint, and a dry wipe with a dirty towel does the same.

  • Hand wash with a clean wash mitt, a gentle soap and two buckets, with a grit guard in each
  • Rinse the car well before you touch it, so loose grit comes off first
  • Dry with a soft towel or a blower, and never with paper towels
  • Wash more often in winter, since salt sits on the paint between washes
  • Keep dish soap, harsh cleaners and abrasive polishes away from the finish

Park with care

Where the car sleeps matters. A garage is best. Outside, avoid parking under trees that drop sap and birds, and give the car room from other doors. Parking lot contact is a common source of dings and scuffs, and a little distance helps.

Paint protection film for impacts

Film is the one product that stops rock chips. LLumar paint protection film is a clear urethane layer that absorbs the impact of stones and debris before they reach the paint. It is self-healing, so light swirls close up with warmth from the sun or the engine.

Most owners start with the front. Basic Front covers the front bumper, full hood, mirrors, headlights and fog lights. Full Front adds the full front fenders. Full Front Plus adds the A-pillars, the roof edge over the windshield and the rocker panels, and Full Body covers every painted panel.

Ceramic coating for everything else

A Gyeon ceramic coating bonds to the paint and forms a hard, slick layer. Water beads and rolls off, dirt has less to grip, and the paint is easier to clean. It resists UV and chemical contamination, such as bird droppings and road film, and it adds gloss. Coatings can go on the paint, wheels and glass, and over paint protection film.

A coating does not stop a stone. It works as a partner to film. Our Gyeon Certified Detailer team applies it over corrected paint, and we sell correction together with every coating.

Tint for the interior

Sun damages the cabin as well as the paint. LLumar ceramic tint keeps the interior cooler and helps protect the dashboard and seats from fading. Film, coating and tint together make up The Beyond Package.

A simple first month routine

  • Week one: book film and coating while the paint is at its best
  • Skip automatic brush washes from the first day
  • Rinse bird droppings and bug splatter off soon after you notice them
  • Wash by hand every couple of weeks, and more often when it is salty out
  • Park in a garage or a shaded spot when you can

How we help

Every job is done in house by our full-time staff in climate-controlled bays, at our shops in Millstone and Ocean Township. We look at the car, tell you which products make sense and quote the job on the car itself. The film carries a manufacturer backed warranty, and we go over care at pickup.

New car paint questions

Should I wax a new car?

Wax is a thin layer that wears off in weeks. A ceramic coating lasts for years with proper care, so most owners who want gloss and easy washing choose a coating.

How soon can I wash a new car?

You can wash it right away, gently and by hand. Avoid brush washes, and wait for our advice on the first wash after film or coating.

Is paint protection film or ceramic coating better for a new car?

They protect against different things. Film stops chips. Coating adds gloss and makes cleaning easier. Our comparison of film, coating and tint explains where each fits.

What happens if I do nothing?

Chips, swirls and etching build up slowly. The sooner protection goes on, the less correction is needed first.

Do I need film, coating and tint all at once?

No. Many owners start with film on the front end or a coating over corrected paint and add the rest later. If you want everything done in a single visit, The Beyond Package brings the three together and we schedule it around your car.

Does the car need to be brand new for any of this?

No. Newer paint is simply easier, because there is less to correct first. A car with a few years on it can still be protected, and we tell you what the paint needs before we start.
