The three biggest causes of car paint damage

Three things do most of the damage to car paint in New Jersey: rock chips, sun and UV, and winter road salt. Each one works on the finish in a different way, and each has a fix. Paint protection film handles impacts, a Gyeon ceramic coating handles the sun and the chemistry, and ceramic window tint looks after the inside of the car.

Here is what each cause does to the paint, and how to protect against it.

1. Rock chips

On the highway, small stones and bits of debris hit the front of the car all the time. Each one can break through the clear coat. A chip is a small mark at first, and then it becomes a place where water and salt reach the layers underneath.

Chips collect on the same parts of the car: the leading edge of the hood, the front bumper, the mirrors and the lower doors. Over months, they add up to a speckled front end. Fixing them means filling, sanding and repainting, and a touch up rarely matches perfectly.

How to protect against it

Paint protection film is the answer. LLumar film is a clear urethane layer that absorbs the impact of a stone so the paint underneath is never struck. It is self-healing, so light scratches in the top layer close up with warmth.

We offer four packages: Basic Front, Full Front, Full Front Plus and Full Body. Most owners start with Full Front. Matte film is available at both shops.

2. Sun and UV

The sun works on paint all year. UV breaks down the clear coat over time, which leads to oxidation, fading and a dull surface. Dark colours and red paint show it first. Cars parked outside in summer take the most.

Heat adds to the problem. A hot hood speeds up the damage from bird droppings and tree sap, which bake into the clear coat. Etching from a dropping that sat for a day in the sun can be a permanent mark.

How to protect against it

A Gyeon ceramic coating bonds to the paint and forms a durable layer that resists UV, oxidation and chemical staining. It adds gloss and makes washing easier. A coating lasts far longer than wax, which wears off in a matter of weeks.

Paint correction comes first, because a coating seals in whatever is under it. We sell correction together with every coating, and the Gyeon Certified Detailer team handles both.

The sun hits the inside of the car as well. LLumar ceramic tint keeps the cabin cooler and helps protect the dashboard and seats from fading and cracking.

3. Winter road salt

Road crews treat New Jersey roads heavily in winter, and the salt and brine end up on your car. They coat the lower panels and the front end. People also wash less in cold weather, so the residue sits for weeks.

Salt is corrosive. It finds chips and scratches in the paint, and from there it works toward the metal. It also leaves a dull film on the surface that is hard to remove once it dries.

How to protect against it

Film on the front end takes the stones that spread chips in the first place, so salt has nothing to settle into. A ceramic coating seals the rest of the paint, so salt and grime stay on the surface and rinse off at the next wash.

Rinse the car often through the winter, even when it is cold. A quick rinse at a self serve bay, with the pressure nozzle held back from the edges of the film, makes a real difference.

Other things that wear paint

Bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap are acidic and sticky. Rinse them off soon after you see them. Automatic brush washes leave swirls. Dry wiping a dusty car does the same.

Combining protection

The three causes call for three different tools, and they work well together. Film guards the panels that take impacts. A coating covers the paint, glass and wheels. Tint covers the cabin. We call the bundle The Beyond Package, and we tailor it to the car and how you drive.

How we do the work

Every job is done in house by our full-time staff in climate-controlled bays at our Millstone and Ocean Township shops. The car is washed, decontaminated and inspected. Film is applied panel by panel with the edges wrapped wherever the shape allows, and coatings go over corrected paint. The film carries a manufacturer backed warranty.

Paint damage questions

What is the biggest threat to car paint?

It depends on the car. A highway commuter takes most of its damage from rock chips. A car parked outside takes it from the sun. Cars driven year round in New Jersey take it from salt.

Can one product protect against all three?

No single product covers everything. Film stops impacts and a coating handles sun and chemistry. Tint protects the interior. That is why we offer them as a bundle.

Do I need to keep waxing a coated car?

No. A coating replaces wax. Wash the car regularly and use products that are safe for coatings.

Will film or coating change how the car looks?

Gloss film and a Gyeon coating keep the colour as it is, and the coating adds depth and gloss. Matte film changes the finish on purpose, so you choose it only if you want that look.

Is dealer paint protection the same thing?

Dealer packages vary, and some are sealants that wear off. A coating applied over corrected paint by a certified detailer is a different product. Film is different again.
