Signs your car needs paint protection film

Your car needs paint protection film if the front end is collecting chips, if you drive a lot at highway speed, or if the paint is new, dark, matte or expensive. Most people think about film after the first chip appears. The better moment is earlier, and a handful of signs on the car and in your routine will tell you when.
Here are six signs it is time, and what each one means for the coverage you choose.
1. Small chips on the hood and bumper
Look along the leading edge of the hood and across the lower bumper in good light. Small dots that show a different colour underneath are rock chips. Each one has broken through the clear coat, and each one lets water and road salt reach the layers below.
Film cannot cover chips that are already there, but it stops new ones from forming. If you only have a few, now is a good time to act. Chips tend to arrive faster once the first ones show, because the front of the car keeps facing the same traffic.
2. Swirls and light scratches
Fine, circular marks that show up in direct sun usually come from washing and drying. Automatic car washes and dry wiping are the usual cause. Marks like these will keep coming back on unprotected paint.
LLumar film has a self-healing top coat. Light swirls and scuffs close up with warmth from the sun or a warm wash. If your paint is already swirled, we correct it before the film goes on, because film keeps what is underneath it.
3. A lot of highway driving
Debris hits the front of the car harder the faster you go. A long commute on the highway, regular road trips or regular runs past construction zones wear the same few panels again and again. Wear is predictable here, and so is the fix.
Full Front covers the hood, bumper, mirrors, lights and fenders. If your miles are mostly at speed, Full Front Plus adds the A-pillars, the roof edge over the windshield and the rocker panels, which catch what the front tires and the hood throw back.
4. Dark, matte or special paint
Black and other dark colours show every mark. A fine scratch that would vanish on silver is easy to spot on black. Special paints, such as pearls and tri-coats, are hard to match if a panel needs a respray.
Matte paint has its own problem. It cannot be polished, so a scuff on matte paint stays. Matte film is available at both shops, and it protects factory matte paint, or gives a satin look to a gloss car.
5. A new car or fresh paint correction
The best time for film is when the paint is at its best. A new car has factory paint with nothing to fix, and a car we have just corrected has had its flaws polished out. Film at that point locks in the good finish.
Waiting means more correction later, and correction takes off a small amount of clear coat each time. Film put on early means the finish you paid for is the finish you keep.
6. You plan to keep or sell the car in good condition
If you are keeping the car for years, chips add up slowly and then all at once. If you plan to sell it, the condition of the paint is one of the first things a buyer looks at. Original paint in good shape is worth protecting for either reason.
What film does not do
Film is not a cure for damage that has already happened. Deep scratches, rust and failed clear coat need repair before anything goes over them. We look at the car and tell you honestly what film can and cannot do for its current condition. If the paint needs work, we talk about correction first, and we sell correction together with ceramic coating.
Choosing coverage
- Basic Front: front bumper, full hood, mirrors, headlights and fog lights. Usually done within a day.
- Full Front: Basic Front plus the full front fenders. One to two days.
- Full Front Plus: Full Front plus the A-pillars, the roof edge over the windshield and the rocker panels. One to two days.
- Full Body: every painted panel. Two to three days.
Many owners pair film with a Gyeon ceramic coating on the rest of the paint. Film for impacts and coating for everything else, with LLumar ceramic tint for the cabin, is what we call The Beyond Package.
How we install it
The car is washed, decontaminated and inspected. We adjust the patterns to your car before cutting, then apply the film panel by panel in a climate-controlled bay, with the edges wrapped wherever the shape allows. All of it is done in house by our full-time staff, and the film carries a manufacturer backed warranty.
Paint protection film questions
Is it too late for film if my car already has chips?
No. We repair or correct what we can, tell you what will still show and then apply film to stop new damage. Earlier is better, though it is rarely too late.
Is film worth it on a daily driver?
Daily drivers rack up the most miles, so they collect the most chips. Full Front is the package most daily drivers choose.
Can film go over a repainted panel?
It can, as long as the paint has fully cured and the finish is sound. Tell us about any repaint when you request a quote so we can check it.
Will film change the colour of my car?
Gloss film is clear, so the colour and gloss are the same. Matte film changes the finish on purpose.
